2022 PA Dutch Calendar – Marks on the Wall from Years Ago: Historic Graffiti of the Dutch Country

The 2022 Pennsylvania Dutch Calendar celebrates the markings left behind by previous inhabitants of the historic buildings throughout the region – die Maericke uff der Wand vun Yaahre z’rick. These enigmatic expressions of generations past document the everyday interactions between people and the spaces where they live and work. Often carved, inscribed, painted, or etched into surfaces of wood and stone, these images beg the question: Why were such marks made? Were they simple pastimes, mischievous graffiti, tradesmen’s marks, demonstrations of artistic skill, or merely confirmation of one’s presence in the world? As a bilingual calendar, all of the months, holidays, and captions are in Pennsylvania Dutch and English for ease of use in families that wish to explore their Pennsylvania heritage.
