Wood Stove
Each one-room schoolhouse in Pennsylvania was heated by a wood and coal stove. These had to be started each day before students arrived so that the schoolhouse would be sufficiently warm for classes. This stove is a Homer No. 27, cast in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Handwashing Station With Tinware Dipper And Soap
As there was no sink or well pump for washing, students used a simple handwashing station, filled from a bucket each day. Students washed their hands prior to lunch, and after recess.

Stoneware Water Crock
Local one room school houses had no plumbing nor electricity, and relied upon a stoneware crock to hold drinking water for the students and teacher. There was no well or source of water at most schools, so a bucket of water had to be carried each day from the nearest farm. This task, like many daily chores, were completed by rotation among the students.

The Freyberger Schoolhouse, previously known as the Stein School or Centre School, was originally built in the 1871 by Jacon Stein in Greenwich Township and held classes until 1956. The building was moved from its original location on Kohler’s Hill to Kutztown University in 1991. This building serves as a reminder of where Keystone State Normal School alumni would have held classes.
The schoolhouse is named in honor of Kutztown alumna Grace Arlene Freyberger (1911-1981) made possible by donations from her sister Ruth M. Freyberger (1912-2002).

The Freyberger Schoolhouse was moved to the Heritage Center museum site through a generous donation by Ruth M. Freyberger (1912-2002) in honor of her sister Grace Arline Freyberger (1911-1981). Both Freyberger sisters were Keystone State Normal School (Now Kutztown University) Alumna and served as public school teachers in one room schools.

“Early Pennsylvania German Farm Work"

"Grandmother Moses of the Lehigh Valley"
Folk art painter Gladys M. Lutz (1909-2007) describes this series of paintings in her own words: “The kind of farming I tried to illustrate in this set of Early Pennsylvania German Farm Work paintings shows as it was done in the 1800’s and early 1900’s before power driven machinery was used to do the work - all the work being done with hand tools. A Pennsylvania German farmer of that era always had plenty of daily work - such as feeding and taking care of the animals, but there were certain seasonal farm activities that were very outstanding and required a great deal of hard work.
Spring - Spring Plowing, Planting the Garden, Beekeeping, Shearing the Sheep.
Summer - Making Hay, Picking Sour Cherries, Harvesting Wheat, Dressing Flax.
Fall - Picking Potatoes, Cooking Apple Butter, Husking Corn, Working at the Limekiln. Winter - Butchering Hogs, Cutting Wood, Filling the Icehouse, Watching the Groundhog.
These were only some of the tasks performed by our forefathers during the course of a year. There was very little leisure time as long as the work was done with hand tools. Since they considered themselves custodians of the soil, they knew that they would pass the farms onto their children and grandchildren. Therefore, they religiously believed in applying fertilizer, rotating crops, keeping soil erosion to a minimum, saving the timber and woodlots and having succeeded with their hard work, they made some of the best farmlands. We should be proud of these ancestors for they certainly have helped to make Pennsylvania what it is today.”

A series of seven paintings by one-room school house teacher and folk artist Gladys M. Lutz (1909-2007) depicting the seven days of the week and the associated farmlife tasks. With titles in Pennsylvania Dutch and English, these seven days include: Munndawg - Wesch Daag (Monday - Wash Day); Dinschdaag - Biggel Daag (Tuesday - Ironing Day); Mittwoch - Flick Daag (Wednesday - Mending Day); Dunnersdaag - Shtrose Dawg (Thursday - Errand Day); Freidaag - Back Daag (Friday - Baking Day); Samschdaag - Butz Daag (Saturday - Cleaning Day); Sunndaag - Karrich Daag (Sunday - Church Day).

Rules for Teachers 1872 and 1915
These reprinted rules for Pennsylvania teachers originally issued in 1872 and 1912 highlight the codes of conduct expected of one-room instructors. These rules governed everything from social life to classroom operations, and were to be enforced by the local school district board.

Palmer Method Cursive Letters
The Palmer Method of teaching cursive writing was the most popular method in the United States for English language script beginning in the late 19th century. This simplified system replaced the earlier Spencerian method which was more ornate and widely used throughout the mid-19th century. Printed cards featuring the Palmer Method letters were found above the blackboard in most local schools, such as these cards, which came from the Hensingerville School in Longswamp Township, Berks County.

School Text Books
Common text books employed in local classrooms were issued in English or German depending upon the community. Many of the early level reading books stressed the learning of letters and correct pronunciation. The German texts featured blackletter typeface, while English texts used standard Latin letters still used today.

Cast Iron Inkwell Covers
The one-room school house curriculum of the 19th century placed special emphasis on the cultivation of good penmanship with the use of a metal-tipped pens dipped in ink. Each desk was outfitted with a single inkwell to be shared by two students, and these cast iron covers kept the ink from drying out over the course of the day. Ink wells were filled each morning, and any remaining ink was returned to a large ink bottle at the end of each day.
